Why this brief was hard
Assort Health is not a typical AI startup. Since launching in 2023, they have processed over 65 million patient interactions, reduced average hold times from 11 minutes to 1 minute, and achieved 11x revenue growth since Q4 2024 — all with a team of 33 people. That kind of trajectory puts serious pressure on go-to-market. The brief was to find the company's first dedicated Sales Engineer: a founding hire who would not be joining an established SE function, but building one. No playbook. No templates. No existing process to inherit. The person needed to lead technical discovery and demos with healthcare enterprise prospects, understand EHR and PMS integrations at a credible depth, and simultaneously develop the internal enablement infrastructure — demo environments, architecture templates, solution frameworks — that the company would scale on. In San Francisco, at a 33-person company, at a total package of up to $295K, competing against every well-funded AI startup in the Bay Area for the same profile of person. The bar was high and the margin for error on a founding hire is essentially zero.
Our Approach
How we tackled it
Ikuto sourced candidates through our Paraform partnership with the understanding that this brief required a specific type of ambition: technical builders with enterprise pre-sales credibility who were actively choosing early-stage environments over established ones. We focused on candidates who had operated in fast-moving, resource-light contexts — people who had shipped demo infrastructure or built SE processes before, not just inherited them. The healthcare AI context added a further filter: the person needed to be genuinely comfortable discussing EHR integrations, patient workflow complexity, and clinical operations with provider-side buyers. Every candidate was video screened before presentation with particular attention to how they balanced technical depth with commercial instinct. Assort's founders — Jon (Stanford, YC, 7 healthcare AI publications) and Jeff (ex-Facebook, ex-Athelas/Commure) — run a high bar. We matched it.
